Winter Caravan Care

For caravan owners across the UK in particular, preparing your caravan for winter is essential to ensure your primary getaway vehicle is ready to go next spring. If you are unsure what needs to be done in order to get ready for colder weather, then please read on for hints, tips and advice from Phantom.

Caring for your caravan is important all year round, but for those few months during winter when they don't see much of the road, it is even more important to ensure your beloved caravan makes it through the bad weather.

Caravan Essentials

l Clean the inside and outside of your caravan thoroughly to remove any dirt, grime and to ensure no mould will form

l If you have a caravan cover, use one with a waxy coating inside, as it will make the clean-up process much easier and will protect your caravan from the elements

l Check your tyre pressure when you set up hibernation, regularly throughout the winter months and again before your first trip out next year

l Use wheel steadies to keep your caravan in one place whilst not in use

l Remove all perishable items from your caravan

l Clean out the fridge and freezer, ensuring you leave the fridge door ajar

l Close all windows, checking seals as you do

l Let cushions and pillows air out by standing them upright, away from the walls

l Use moisture traps, if necessary

l Leave internal doors open to allow air to circulate

l Drain taps and shower head. Dry thoroughly

l Remove internal water tank

l Thoroughly clean and empty the toilet

l Disconnect the gas and store cylinders away from buildings and heat sources

l Remove all batteries and turn plugs off

l Charge mains battery and spares

l Test heating sporadically throughout your caravan downtime

If you are cautious about leaving your caravan unoccupied for a long period of time, especially if it is in storage away from your watchful eye and your home, then it might be worth investing in a caravan tracking device and/or an in-car CCTV system.

Our caravan tracking service is a method of ensuring you can locate your caravan if it gets stolen. Using GPS, it will locate your caravan to within 8-feet; and our surveillance team will notify you and the relevant authorities. Create a bespoke package that allows you to monitor and track your vehicle 24 hours a day, no matter where you are.

The installation and use of an in-car CCTV system not only allows you to capture incredible family moments on holidays and weekends away, but motion activated cameras can catch criminals in the act, and even provide evidence where necessary.
