GDPR; The what, when and how it will affect you!

The basics:

  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is replacing the previous data protection rules implemented by the EU for the past two decades.
  • It comes into effect on the 25th of May 2018.
  • Basically it’s to better protect the rights of the individual and makes companies more accountable for security and handling of data.

How it will affect you:

Benefits to the individuals Impacts on companies

Individuals will have more rights regarding the processing of their data;

-Full accessibility on what data companies have on you + it must be accurate/current

-The ‘right to be forgotten’. After companies have fulfilled the need to keep your data; it will be deleted.

-Data portability. The right to transmit your data to another controller is more controlled.

-Automated decisions. The right not to be subject to any ‘automated decision’ that would significantly affect you.

-Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) will have the power to enforce much more severe penalties for breaches of personal data.

-Companies will no longer be able to use long, illegible terms and conditions.

-Organisations will need to attain explicit consent from individuals regarding the processing of their data.

-Breaches of security must be reported to the DPA and any individuals affected within 72 hours
